Boxing coach in Greymont is against bullying

GREYMONT – A professional boxing coach is determined to equip children with the necessary skills to deal with bullies.

Thabiso Montse, a coach at Wisdom Boxing Academy and Thunder Boxing Club, has a passion for community work.

When he is not behind the training pads, Montse works with children in the community and surrounding areas through an anti-bullying project.

One of his first anti-bullying training sessions was held with the First Greenside Scouts. “We also go to schools to teach children how to deal with bullies,” Montse said.

While Montse is a boxing coach, his anti-bullying training does not necessarily consist of fighting. “You don’t know who you’re teaching to fight. You could have some bullies as part of the group.”

Montse focuses on conflict resolution and completely avoiding encounters with bullies. He teaches children the dangers of resolving conflict with violence as well as how to spot bullies by their behaviour.

Furthermore, Montse encourages children to take up boxing to gain confidence, focus and discipline.

“Boxing teaches you many things, not just fighting. You learn to be vigilant and think strategically.”

Montse’s top five anti-bullying tips:

  • Always look confident
  • Do not look like a threat to the bully
  • Do not try to fight back
  • Make the bully aware that you will report his or her behaviour
  • Tell an adult, teacher or any guardian about any bullying incident.
