Park upgrade planned for Westdene

WESTDENE – The Westdene Tighty Park will go from being a construction site to an activity-filled park.

Westdene will soon receive an exciting park upgrade.

Tighy Park, located on 5th Avenue in the area, has been used as a construction site for Kingsway Civil, a construction company carrying out upgrades around the area. The park is currently bustling with construction workers and vehicles as well as raw materials.

According to Ward 69 councillor, Genevieve Sherman, the company agreed to beautify and upgrade the park once they were done using it.

The Westdene Sophiatown Residents Association (WSRA) met with Sherman, the Johannesburg Development Agency, architects and Kingsway Civil to address some of the issues raised by residents.

The main concerns were construction boundaries and how the current boundary is very close to residents around the park as well as drainage.

With regard to the boundaries, it was agreed that a section of the current construction on 5th Avenue’s side will be moved to adhere to the City of Johannesburg’s building line bylaws.

The drainage issue raised was twofold: The drainage on Dover Road as well as on Thornton Road, near Usave. At the time of print, the relevant stakeholders were still in the process of supplying the WSRA with a plan to address the drainage.

Once construction comes to an end and the park is upgraded, it will be equipped with various new features which would attract the area’s youth.

Included in the upgrade:

  • Walkway with lights
  • Fencing with lockable gates
  • New benches
  • Play area
  • Outdoor gym
  • Space for soccer and other activities
  • Skatepark.
