A woman was shot in the stomach and leg during an alleged attempted hijacking in Newlands.
Suburban Crime Prevention director Clive Maher said reaction officers arrived on the scene when they came across a post on Facebook. It was posted by a concerned resident who heard gunshots and someone screaming.
“We sent vehicles to the scene and when the officers arrived they discovered the woman was shot in the stomach and leg. One of the residents witnessed three suspects running off on foot, after the shooting who got into a white VW golf with no number plate,” said Maher.

Meanwhile, police arrived on the scene shortly after the incident took place. Sophiatown Police Station spokesperson Warrant officer TJ de Bruyn said the incident took place on the corner of 5th Street and Albert Road, on 17 January just after 9pm.
The woman was transported to the Helen Joseph Hospital and a case of attempted murder has been opened. “The case is still under investigation and we encourage the public to come forward with any information relating to this case,” said De Bruyn
He offered the following tips:
- Avoid making any sudden movements during a hijacking. Adhere to the hijacker’s instructions. Your life is more important than a car and other valuables
- Be vigilant of your environment in your neighbourhood and in other areas
- Avoid waiting at robots late at night. Check the road on both sides, before continuing on your journey
- Avoid quiet or abandoned streets late at night
- Report any suspicious behaviour.
