A guide to a sporting V-Day
JOBURG – Not all couples like hearts and chocolates, some like cycling and running.
JOBURG – Not every couple likes candlelit dinners and exchanging gifts with hearts on them, some couples are a bit more adventurous and sporty.
Johannesburg is full of little sporting getaways couples can visit this Valentine’s Day, most of which don’t cost a cent.
Westdene Dam Park:

The park is home to two outdoor gyms which ticks two boxes on the gym bunny couple to do list.
The gyms focus on body weight and are great for a friendly (or not so friendly) couple’s challenge.
The park is also the perfect place for a serene jog with trees that provide plenty of shade for an extended kis … ehem! water break.
The Westdene Dam Park is the park that keeps on giving and has two outdoor sports facilities that are always open and free to use. All couples need to do is bring along a ball for basketball, soccer, tennis, hockey or netball to enjoy the facility.
Lastly, for those in favour of spokes and handlebars over running shoes, bikes are more than welcome in the park.
Linden Bowling Club:

The club is not only home to manicured greens, it also is home to excellent coaches who on Fridays from 2pm teach newbies how to play and could make for an excellent free Valentine’s Day date.
Emmarentia Dam and Johannesburg Botanical Gardens:

The Emmarentia Dam and Johannesburg Botanical Gardens have paths for running and biking with a romantic backdrop of the water and surrounding trees as well as flowers in the gardens.
Melville Koppies:

The Melville Koppies has various entrances in Melville and Westdene. The Northcliff Melville Times most recently used the entrance on the corner where 4th Street and 9th Avenue meet.
There are also weekly guided hikes at the Koppies for a fee. The hike can last up to three hours and is 10km long.
For more information about the hike contact organisers on 011 482 4797.
Zoo Lake:

Zoo Lake is all about running, biking and shooting hoops. It has paths around it, perfect for a run or a bike dash.
The lake’s basketball courts were recently repainted for the Nike Battle Force campaign. The bespoke artwork makes the perfect setting for a game of two-on-two.
