Bookworms gather at Kingston Frost Park

BRIXTON – Enthusiastic community members gathered for a fun day of reading.

The theme of the day was all about books and reading at Kingston Frost Park in Brixton.

The Library Day took place on 17 March after the Brixton Community Forum chairperson Sophia Welz said they realised a number of children don’t have books at home or any other access to books.

She said the Brixton community is very active and diverse and added that the idea of the library is to take a book to read and return it, however, that’s not a requirement.

“We approached the Read Educational Trust’s Derek Smith who runs it, and he made sure we got an amazing and free library. The kids were a little bit shy in the beginning but they’ve all taken a book and hope they take books home to read because reading is one of the most important things.”

She added that they plan to ensure there is a constant flow of new books and believe it’s important for children to have their own books.

Books are placed in an accessible place for the community to help themselves.

A number of children’s books have been donated by the trust and some community members.

They are also a couple of adult novels available.

“It’s also important that there also enough South African stories and not just have stories from the rest of the world. We are very lucky to have a book about a Gekko from an author who lives in the area, which is really cool. Hopefully, we’ll have more Brixton writers add to our collection,” hinted Welz.

Through this event, she added, her aim is to teach children how to read and for books to be accessible to the community.

Everyone is invited to take a book, which is situated in the safe part of the park next to the security guard and the gym which has benches. You can even read the book in a quiet spot in the park.
