Greymont’s West Road to be closed off as JRA repairs bridge

GREYMONT – Expect heavy traffic, delays and detours following the announcement of necessary bridge rehabilitation.

Rehabilitation of the bridge on West Road forces the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) to close the road.

The JRA announced that it has closed a section of West Road in Greymont due to bridge rehabilitation. The bridge will be closed for safety reasons from 30 October 2018. A statement released by the JRA read, “Subsequent to a routine bridge inspection the Johannesburg Roads Agency concluded that there is a need to rehabilitate a major culvert infrastructure at West Road, between 8th and 5th streets in Greymont.”

During the inspection, it was discovered that a crucial part of the bridge was in poor condition with severe erosion on embankments. According to the JRA, the level of erosion has resulted in the closure of the bridge until rehabilitation work is completed. JRA’s acting managing director, Goodwill Mbatha, said, “The continued use of this overhead carriageway leaves the motorists at risk because of imminent collapse.”

JRA announced the following traffic advisory:

• Traffic detour plan will be put in place to collect traffic on 6th Road for residents travelling to the west of Greymont from the east to the principal minor arterial, Long street.

• Motorists are urged to adhere to traffic guidelines and signage.

The JRA would also like to apologise to all road users and residents for any inconvenience that may be caused as a result of these repairs and rehabilitation work.
