A peaceful festive season to Ward 69
JOBURG – Councillor Sherman states that all her proactive residents were the communities 2018 heroes.
While many are preparing to go on holiday or welcome friends and family to their homes for the festive season, Ward 69’s councillor has taken the time to reflect on the year that was.
Councillor Genevieve Sherman’s ward, which consists of areas such as Westdene, Rossmore, small sections of Hurst Hill, Westbury, Brixton and Coronationville, was quite active in the year of 2018.
Sherman shared some of the year’s major highlights which stood out for her as said she was extremely grateful to her residents. “The various communities within the ward coming together in taking ownership of their respective areas, A Re Sebesteng campaigns, logging calls for reference numbers. The communities generally being proactive regarding service delivery issue.”
She also reflected on the unfortunate period that gripped the community of Westbury. During the Westbury protests, there were many violent acts that grabbed the attention of the public and resulted in fatal shootings and destruction of infrastructure. She said the lowlights of 2018 were, “The loss of precious lives during the shootings in certain sections of the ward, the recent violent protests and the subsequent complete destruction of the Rea Vaya bus station in Coronationvile.”
Regardless of these regrettable incidents. she has high hopes for the new year. “My hopes for 2019 is to keep the ubuntu currently prevailing and that we may achieve more success stories for Ward 69.”
When asked who she regarded as the hero of the community she said, “I have come to realise that the ward’s dynamics differs from area to area. However, every single resident who has actively been involved in being proactive in any way contributing to the success of the ward, is singled out as the hero.”
Councillor Sherman would like to wish every single resident of Ward 69 a peaceful festive season and a great 2019.
