Suzy Beaumont helps initiative for #PeriodsWithDignity
NORTHCLIFF – Northcliff teacher is assisting girls' learners at the school with providing them access to much-needed hygiene items.
NORTHCLIFF – The Pad Princess project dropped off much needed sanitary pads and pantyliners for unprivileged girls at the school on 13 March.
Northcliff Primary School’s marketing and resource mobiliser Suzy Beaumont said noticed that there were a lot of learners in need at the school, whether be it food, stationary or school uniforms. She also noticed a problem with girls who came to the school’s sick room frequently, and she realised the big need for sanitary pads.
“I realised that there were learners at the schools who didn’t have pads or the only one they had is the one they are wearing for the day. I am a part of the charities group on Facebook and that’s when I saw Alyson [Samson] from the Pad Princess project, was giving away pads to girls and young woman in need. I got in contact with her and she gave us sanitary pads.”
She further explained, “These handouts from The Pad Princess have helped a lot. I think now it’s more for the girls who start their menstrual cycle for the first time, have an ‘accident’ here and there or them not realising that there begin date is on that day of the month.”
Beaumont said that all learners are taught about personal hygiene in their school curriculum and the school also tries to get Lil-Lets out every year to do a talk on female hygiene and how to use the sanitary pads for the girls. “We’re also talking to other health retailers to come on board with the education of menstrual and personal hygiene for the learners.”
The school has a support class for learners who will benefit from being in a smaller class environment. They are taught the same curriculum as the other learners but more in-depth and also have the benefit of an intern teacher to help them.
