Housebreakings on the rise

BRIXTON – Safety tips to help avoid being a victim of housebreakings and robberies.

Police notice a rise in housebreakings and robberies and warn residents to be more vigilant.

These crimes are on the rise in the Brixton policing precinct according to the spokesperson Jeanette Backhoff. “Brixton Police Station has seen an increase in house robberies and housebreakings. Areas mostly effected are mainly Brixton Crosby, Mayfair West and Vrededorp.”

Backhoff indicated that the crimes tend to happen between midnight and 4am and between 4pm and 8pm.

The police are urging residents to be vigilant during these times. They are trying to deal with the issue but have asked residents to practise safety strategies at home to ensure all is well.

Brixton police provided the following tips to help residents from becoming victims of these on-the-rise crimes:

  • Keep outside lights on throughout the night.
  • Ensure that your gates are properly locked at all times.
  • Meet and greet your neighbours in order to assist each other with any safety and security-related issues.
  • Communicate with trustworthy neighbours to keep an eye on your home whenever you are not around.
  • Ensure that those at home, domestic workers, gardeners and children, have the contact details of emergency services, security companies and the police.
  • Report any suspicious or unusual behaviour as soon as you notice it.
  • Do not open your home to strangers and verify all service calls to the home such as City of Johannesburg staff.
  • Regularly clean your driveway and parts visible to the public as this will show potential criminals that there are people home often.
