Lindy Johnson looks back at her fresh yet entertaining comedy career
LINDEN – She is weird and awkward but she's also super funny.
Meet local resident and star comedian Lindy Johnson.
Super funny, weird in a cool way, amusingly awkward and beyond beautiful. These are some of the characteristics that will you get to see when watching Linden’s very own Lindy Johnson. She is going stage-to-stage to show why she is listed as one of the hottest comedy acts in South Africa and she is doing a great job.
The 25-year-old, born and raised in Paarl, already has some remarkable achievements behind her name. Last year, she was hand-picked by Trevor Noah for the Trevor Noah Presents NationWild show on Showmax. Johnson was also nominated for the Best Newcomer at the Comics’ Choice Awards last year and won the Savanna ‘Show Us Your Apples’ Open Mic 2017 showdown.
The road to these accolades wasn’t easy according to Johnson. She reflected on her first show, “It was a competition on campus and it was amazing, I couldn’t have asked for a better first time – I came second in the competition. I lost to a group of dancers which I’m not sour about at all.”
She went on to continue perfecting her craft which resulted in her being granted more opportunities to be on stage. Most recently she shared the stage with Tumi Morake, Nina Hastie, Celeste Ntuli and other great female comics at the Women’s Day Edition of the Kings and Queens of Comedy Show.
Besides stand-up comedy gigs, Johnson is also part of an award-winning show. “Frizz Pop is a duo show I do with Kate Pinchuck. It has won a Standard Bank Ovation Award at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival.”
The pair also run their own comedy show with a strictly-ladies line-up at the Raptor Room.
As a female comedian, Johnson shared her views on the industry for comics like her. “It is fantastic in the sense that any problems we might face are because of how the world is set up for women and not because of the industry itself. I feel supported and encouraged as a comedian always.”
She added that there is definitely room in the industry for more female comedians. “We need you. If you’re a woman who wants to do comedy, I highly encourage it. Besides, even if there was magically somehow not space, we’d make the space.”
Johnson plans to finish the year strong with more gigs. Those interested in seeing what Lindy Johnson is all about should check her out on social media platforms – Facebook at Lindy Johnson; Twitter and Instagram @lindyyay.
