All out for Heritage Dday
AUCKLAND PARK – 150 spekboom trees planted by school learners for Heritage Day.
As is the case every year, schools go all out to celebrate Heritage Day and all the different heritage footprints that we have in South Africa. Auckland Park Preparatory School was no different as they had a range of fun and educational activities for their learners as the school hosted their Heritage Day event on 27 September.
According to school’s Kate Becker, the day started off with a special Heritage Day assembly aimed at highlighting the various South African cultures and then contributes to the school’s eco-drive, “In line with the school eco-drive, all the girls planted 150 proudly South African spekboom trees around the school field perimeter and sang the national anthem. The planting of these trees was significant as it was an opportunity to look towards the future of South Africa on a day dedicated to celebrating the past.”

Becker shared why they choose to plant spekboom trees, “Spekboom trees are renowned for fighting climate change and air pollution, easy to propagate and grow, water-wise and super resilient and can live up to 200 years old.”

She also explained that the planting of the trees is done in the hopes that future generations will look back and see that they cared about the planet. The day was concluded with the school learners and staff enjoying braaied boerewors, pap, relish and homemade ginger beer to drink. The girls then played traditional multicultural games and a fun day was had by all.
