Local surgeries targeted by criminals

BRIXTON – Local businesses given tips to minimise risk of loss during robberies as police look to reduce new trend.

There seems to be a new crime trend in Johannesburg where local medical surgeries are being targeted by armed criminals.

This is according to the spokesperson of the Brixton Police Station, Jeanette Backhoff who said there had been a spike of robberies at surgeries which had been reported at different police stations in Johannesburg.

“Two to three suspects will enter surgeries with firearms and demand cash, laptops, cell phones and jewellery from employees and patients,” Backhoff explained how these robberies were carried out.

Brixton police are warning all local surgeries to be cautious and vigilant at all times as this trend continues. Backhoff said currently they were dealing with two such incidents with the robbers using the same modus operandi.

Brixton police have asked anyone with information regarding these incidents to phone their nearest police station or Crime Stop on 011 894 6719. Backhoff added that all information received was followed up and their partnership with Crime Intelligence and the Trio Task Team would enable them to identify the perpetrators.

The station provided safety tips for local businesses:

  •  Have at least two employees present during the opening and closing of the business
  •  Install an alarm
  •  Keep the minimum of cash in the cash register at all times
  •  Place excess money in a safe or deposit it as soon as possible
  •  Place a surveillance camera behind the cash register facing the front counter
  •  If you see something suspicious, call the police or security company immediately
  •  Keep personal valuables locked in desks or lockers.
