Easier entry to Emmarentia for cyclists and walkers thanks to Jozi Trails
EMMARENTIA – Jozi Trails keeps to its word of a safe and enjoyable experience for all.
Keeping true to their word, Jozi Trails are doing all in their power to keep those using their trails safe at all times.
From the first of week of June, motorists driving along Olifants Road have been met with a new raised pedestrian crossing, often mistaken for a massive speed hump. According to Jozi Trails managing director Albert van Urk the basis of the application for the crossing was the safety of those on foot and riding bikes.”It became apparent to us that crossing into Emmarentia from Olifants Road was extremely dangerous, people really struggled to cross here, especially in the mornings,” he said. This prompted Jozi Trails to kick-start the project to make it safer for all.

Applications to the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) were made in late 2019 while Jozi Trails raised money for the project. Van Urk added, “The project was sponsored by a private company and trail users who made donations themselves for the cause.”I’m a cyclist and walker and I’ve stood at that particular crossing in the morning waiting and waiting to cross. The feedback we have gotten is really amazing.”
Some people have complained about the size of the crossing alleging that it had damaged vehicles but Van Urk said all processes and requirements of the agency had been followed and met during the installation of the crossing.”We reached out to JRA, found one of their approved contractors who did the job, and JRA actually signed off on the job. JRA was happy with the standards of the crossing.” He concluded that the agency’s authority on road-related matters was the key reason why they approached them for guidance and leadership from the very beginning of the project.
