Watch out, Car theft is on the rise

BRIXTON – Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays are when a majority of these crimes have been reported.

Police share safety tips following an increase in theft of motor vehicles and hi-jacking.

Brixton Police Station currently experiences a rise in vehicle-related crimes in the communities of their precinct. According to the station’s spokesperson, Jeanette Backhoff, most cases being reported in the area are coming from the Brixton and Auckland Park suburbs. The station has also been using their weekly crime awareness campaigns to bring this issue to the attention of the community. “Brixton police are increasing patrols in these areas and have put measurements in place to curb the increases in theft of motor vehicles and hi-jacking,” Backhoff said.

She stated that most of these incidents take places on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays with times ranging from 6am to 9am, 12pm to 3pm and 6pm to 9pm. The station is warning all motorists to be vigilant and alert at all times.

Safety tips provided by Brixton Police Station:

  • Always be vigilant
  • Know your surroundings
  • Always check around when entering your premises
  • Keep your doors locked at all times
  • Never leave the vehicle idling unattended – not even to open your gate
