Police walk for awareness in Cosmo City
COSMO CITY – The police and other role-players engaged in an awareness walk through the streets of Cosmo City on 1 December.
To honour World Aids Day, 16 Days of Activism, and the beginning of festive season crime-fighting operations, the Honeydew police and other role players engaged in an awareness walk through the streets of Cosmo City on 1 December.

According to the Honeydew police’s Captain Karen Jacobs, the reduction of crime in the Honeydew area is looking good, except for assaults.

“We take these efforts very seriously. We recently dealt with a case where a person attempted to commit suicide due to experiencing gender-based violence, and it is incidents like this that show we need to get the message out about this issue. During our 16 Days of Activism, we focus on assaults and domestic violence, and let us also not forget that males can be victims of this type of crime too.”

“Whenever we engage in a project like this at the Honeydew Police Station, we try to include all relevant stakeholders. As 1 December is an important day for many aspects of our efforts, we thought that it was only fitting that we had one day of launch activities,” said Honeydew police spokesperson Captain Balan Muthan.

The walk was joined by members of the Cosmo City Community Police Forum, community patrollers, and members of women and children’s mental health empowerment NGO Phola. Members handed out several pamphlets with information addressing sexual, child and gender-based violence to passing Cosmo City pedestrians to help enforce the police’s drive to raise awareness about the issue.
Pamphlets addressing festive season safety and the prevalence of Aids and how to prevent it was also handed out to the community.

“We also had our chaplain join us from the divine intervention unit who shared prayers and words of inspiration with the community. This was in aid of sharing words of wisdom to motivate the community to encourage them to end the spread of gender-based violence,” concluded Muthan.

The police’s 16 Days of Activism started on 25 November and will run until 10 December. It is an annual campaign run internationally to help spread awareness about the prevalence of gender-based violence.
