‘2020 threw the sucker punch, but 2021 will see us rise’ – Beverly Weweje
WARD 98 – Councillor Beverly Weweje shares with her ward a New Year's message to inspire.
You’ve heard once and thrice before, 2020 has been an unprecedented year, and as such, it needed a change in the way of life from us all.
As we look towards 2021 we unwittingly seek the hope that we aspire each year brings with it. Ward 98 councillor Beverly Weweje shares with us challenges her ward faced in 2020 and her New Year’s message for all.
Here is what she had to say:
The insurmountable odds that faced our ward in 2020, shall surely be recorded and remembered for a long time to come. The lockdown of an already frail economy and the rampant fear that spread through, not only our ward but the country, was meant to bring us to our knees.
It did not, together we faced the odds and were united in fighting the tribulations together. In reflection of 2020, I am reminded of the acts of kindness and the perseverance that flowed from the community of Ward 98 and neighbouring wards. I am reminded of charity organisations, faith-based organisations, retail stores and individuals who saw the need and heeded pleas for help.
Your acts of kindness equipped the Windsor West Shelter with the necessities to provide the displaced persons with a roof over their head during lockdown. The contribution of equipment, clothes, food, sanitiser, masks, books, toiletries, etc was completely as a result of the community’s generosity and enabled the shelter to run like a world-class organisation. When all forms of income had been stripped away from individual households, your act of kindness provided much-needed food parcels to these households,
The year 2020 translated a very important message: while planning and preparing for the future is fundamentally important, we are not always in control of the sucker punches thrown at us. How we respond to that sucker punch, will determine the outcome. We responded with love, hope, perseverance and acts of kindness. We responded well.
My wish for my residents in the new year is, as we plan individually, for our families, and for our ward, we carry the same traits of resilience and compassion that helped us overcome 2020 into 2021. As 2020 threw the sucker punch, but 2021 will see us rise.
