New cricket partnership to improve the game

BRAAMFONTEIN – Wits and Central Gauteng Lions share resources, expertise and skills

On 30 January, Wits University and cricket franchise Central Gauteng Lions (CGL) announced their new partnership which they hope will contribute to ongoing efforts to develop talent and grow the game of cricket.

According to a statement released by Cricket South Africa, Wits University will avail their world-class facilities to Central Gauteng Lions inclusive of cricket nets, cricket ovals, gymnasium, lecture hall, indoor cricket hall and office support.

Chief executive officer of the franchise, Jono Leaf-Wright said the new partnership’s objective was to optimise the collective resources that both the franchise and Wits University have, to better develop the sport. He added, “One of our main objectives is to create a regional academy that will provide opportunities for players from disadvantaged communities to develop academically and on the cricket field, from the greater Gauteng region.

“In Wits University, we believe that we’ve found superb facilities and top-notch staff and I’ve no doubt that this partnership will further strengthen our offering to our CGL cricketing community.” The franchise is known as the custodian of all cricket activities in the greater Sedibeng, West Rand, Vaal, and Johannesburg area and manages the Imperial Wanderers Stadium and Jozi Stars.

The partnership will also allow Wits University to make use of the franchise’s grounds should it be necessary. In addition, the franchise will be responsible for the formation of development programmes, leadership programmes and all-round mentorship for Wits cricketing students. Head of cricket at Wits University, Sharmin Naidoo said, “We look forward to this relationship moving forward from strength to strength while cementing the talented pipeline of cricketers produced by this great province.

Together we want to become the best tertiary cricket programme and provincial cricket structure in SA and these relationships are critical to ensure that we are both successful in our journey together.”
