Stealing security guard sentence to 15 years

BRIXTON – Police urge businesses to do proper background checks on potential employees before hiring them.

Security officer sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment for the theft of vehicle parts.

According to Brixton Police Station’s spokesperson Jeanette Backhoff, the case involving the security officer was finalised on 17 February when the accused was found guilty of breaking into a business premise and theft to the tune of R135 000 worth of parts. The officer committed the crime in September 2020 and worked at the car dealership he stole from.

Backhoff explained, “The security officer broke into the dealerships store room, loaded motor parts in a trolley and dust bins after he had switched off the cameras in the store. Fortunately, another security company managed to see what was happening and called Brixton Police Station for assistance.”

Upon the police’s arrival, a preliminary investigation was held which lead to the immediate arrest of the suspect.

Brixton police are thrilled that they were able to put this security officer behind bars but are using the conviction as a reminder to the public to ensure they are hiring people they can trust.

Backhoff added, “This is another example to business owners and managers that you need to do a thorough security check on the people you employ. One way to make sure is to do a police clearance.”

To do this a person will need to visit their nearest police station to have their fingerprints recorded and checked through the police’s system to ascertain if they have been potentially involved in any crimes or cases.

“This is a proper background check and will take three to four weeks.”

Brixton Police Station Commander Colonel Mkhacani Maluleke thanked all the members who were involved in the arrest and investigation.

Maluleke expressed, “We are thankful to our members who strive to keep our community safe and to see our criminals behind bars.”
