One less illegal gambling spot

GREYMONT – Drugs include mandrax, crystal meth and KAT while the police also arrested those found in public with toy guns and knives.


Police bust illegal gambling establishment during a joint operation.

Sophiatown Police Station is thankful to all role players present and involved in their recent success. On 6 February during a joint operation between the station, other police stations in the Johannesburg district, Metro police, the police’s Intelligence Unit and the Gauteng Gambling Board a Greymont establishment was raided.

This is according to the station’s Colonel Devan Govender who stated activities taking place at the premises where illegal. “All computers were confiscated and a case registered. [This included 19 computer screens, 12 computer boxes and an undisclosed amount of cash.] Such illegal establishments are known to contribute to crime in the area.”

The joint operation also led to the upkeeping of law and order in the area. Govender added, “We made other arrests while closing illegal shebeens while many suspects were also arrested for being in possession of drugs and dealing them.”
Drugs included mandrax, crystal meth and KAT. The police also arrested those found in public with toy guns and knives. Govender celebrated the joint operation and thanked Brigadier Hewwie Jones who led the operation in partnership with Govender.

Sophiatown Police are calling on the public to inform them of any illegal activity taking place in their community. The station has once again committed itself to ensure the safety and security of the community and all within it. Those with information on illegal or suspicious activity are encouraged to call the police’s Crime Stop hotline on 10111.
