According to Sophiatown Police Station spokesperson Captain TJ de Bruyn, the initiative was aimed at hosting netball matches and inviting fans of the sport, players, organisations and the community and asking them to donate at least one sanitary product as their entrance fee to the event. De Bruyn said, “Many young girls in the area are missing out on so much because they can’t afford sanitary products. We hosted this to remind them that we haven’t forgotten them and that we are here to help them.”

Netball player of the day and Sophiatown Police Station Social Crime Prevention Unit’s Constable Precious Motsoko said there were two aims of this initiative. She added, “Firstly, we wanted to help those in the community who struggle to access feminine hygiene products. There are many young girls in our community who are missing out on school and their other commitments because they and their family can’t afford such.

”In addition to this, improving the relationship between the community and the police was another goal. “We feel like a lot of people have lost trust in the station and its services so we would like to introduce ourselves to the community again and remind them that we are on the same team.”
