Sophiatown reminded of the horror that is 10A

SOPHIATOWN – Ward councillor says the fate of 10A has and will always rest with the authorities at the City.

Police confirm that the body of a man was found at the controversial property.

The communities of Westdene and Sophiatown have once again raised concerns about the notorious Second Avenue property after word had spread that the body of a murdered person was dumped at the house.

Sophiatown Police Station spokesperson Captain TJ de Bruyn stated that the body was not dumped but rather that the man was alive for some time and had an encounter with a resident there. “At around 7.30am on 5 May a resident was in her room when someone knocked at her door. She opened to check who it was and found her neighbour who told her that there was a man in front of the door. When she checked she saw that an unknown white man was lying on the floor in a pile of blood.”

According to the witness, the man was still alive at that time but not talking. De Bruyn added that the witness then called the paramedics who responded to the scene but on their arrival the unidentified man had died from his wounds. De Bruyn confirmed that no arrests have been made but a murder docket was opened.

Ward 69 councillor Genevieve Sherman was among those shocked to learn of what had happened at 10A and it added additional reasons to why she believes the matter must be resolved once and for all.
Sherman explained, “I have been informed that not a lot of people still live at the property but around three remain at present. I have contacted the relevant authorities in the City to try remove these people and taken to a place of safety and to secure the building by barbed wire and mothballed to ensure no one can gain access again.”
This would be the umpteenth time the councillor contacts the City on the matter as it has been an existing issue since well before the City’s current administration took over.

Sherman assured the community that she is doing all she can to find a permanent way forward to deal with the property. Police urge those with information on the matter to share it with them and stated it can be done anonymously.
