How to file complaint against SAPS

PARKVIEW – Do you know what steps to take if you have received bad treatment from your local police station? Here is what you should do.

After recent complaints from the public against the South African Police Service, Colonel Theledi Gopane of Parkveiw Police Station would like to advise the public on what steps to follow when reporting a complaint.

This advice comes in the wake of concerns expressed on Facebook page ‘I Love Parkhurst’ pertaining to the behaviour of certain SAPS members.

The colonel said the public may report complaints regarding the South African Police Service at their nearest police station. Complaints can vary from torture/and or cruel, inhumane and/or degrading treatment and /or punishment, committed by law enforcement members including poor service delivery regarding:

  • Police response to crimes
  • Complaints against the SAPS management or members
  • Poor investigation
  • Police negligence
  • Police misconduct/corruption/brutality
  • Police communication/ feedback.

Gopane explained that any dissatisfaction or disappointment by anyone or organisation, locally, regionally and internationally in relation to the conduct thereof, of service that was rendered or supposed to have been rendered by SAPSs as represented by its employees, will be investigated to ensure that it is redressed to the satisfaction of the complaint.
“If need be the necessary disciplinary steps will be taken against SAPS employees should it be found that they were negligent or unprofessional on their conduct or the service they rendered or did not render.”

Any person, including a minor, who is dissatisfied with the conduct or lack thereof, of service delivery by SAPS, as represented by its employees has a right to lodge a complaint with the station. When members of the public report a complaint, the respective complaint will be required to contain detailed information such as:

  • Full names and surname
  • Identity number
  • Residential/business address
  • Telephone and cell phone numbers
  • Email address.

Complainants will also be required to give a detailed description of what occurred during the incident including the province/area in which the complaint originates as well as the date and time of the incident and details of the SAPS officials involved. All service delivery complaints against the SAPS, will be registered and referred to the relevant business unit, division, province, station, section or unit responsible for investigating it.

The complaints may be reported to the Parkview Police Station complaints coordinator:

  • Captain Constance Oliphant, SefaraMR@saps.gov.za or mudaum2@saps.gov.za or
  • Station Commander Colonel Theledi Gopane, GopaneTZ@saps.gov.za or
  • Parkview Community Policing Chairperson Geraldine Connell, Chair@parkviewCPF.co.za
