De La Salle Holy Cross College recently held an inter-house debate that was livestreamed for the first time.
To share on the experience was the school’s debating captain, Langelihle Nduko, here is what she had to say:
The evening of 25 May marked the commencement of our annual inter-house debates at the college. This tradition has been around for as long as I’ve been at the school, except this time around it looked rather different. In these unprecedented times we’ve all had to learn to adapt to the new normal, and the Debating Club is no exception to that. By using a bigger venue, practising safe social distancing, and setting up a live stream for parents and supporters at home, we were able to successfully host the first round of our inter-house debates in over two years. I must commend all of the speakers who not only had to deal with the nerves of speaking in front of a crowd, but also had the added pressure of being recorded live, they all did amazing and kept their composure.
I’ve been passionate about debating for about as long as I’ve known about it. It’s like public speaking with the added twist of being persuasive and having to think quickly on your feet. Debating has also provided me with the ability to view life from more than one perspective, as sometimes you have to defend an argument that you don’t personally believe in, forcing you to reconsider your own beliefs and biases. All in all, the thing that makes me the most passionate, is watching all my fellow debaters (especially the juniors) break out of their shell and overcome their fear of public speaking, and I can’t wait to watch everyone grow from strength to strength.
