A royal screening to remember

EMMARENTIA – The Historic Documentary Film society treated audiences to home movies shot by Queen Elizabeth II in her earlier years.

It was a morning of royal reflections at The South African National Museum of Military History when the audience was treated to the screening of home movies captured by Queen Elizabeth II.

The event was attended by members of Second Innings, Good Times, International Women’s, Probus, and U3A clubs. It was put together by the Historic Documentary Film Society to honour the Queen’s 95th birthday which was in April. At the time of her 90th birthday, to pay tribute to the monarch, the royal family put together a video of some of the footage the Queen had shot using her own cine camera.

According to Selwyn Klass, one of the event organisers, the Queen was quite an astute cinematographer.
This was exactly the sort of footage many in the audience had never seen and were quite excited to watch. “Well felt that five years later after she has gone through the mill, it’s the perfect opportunity to honour her again,” said Klass.

He added that many in attendance had had their own special memories of a royal encounter. “Some can go right back to the official visit of the royal family back in 1947 and can reflect on where they stood when the motorcade went by.”
After the video was screened, guests left feeling grateful as they felt they had watched a part of the Queen’s personal history they would have otherwise not have seen.
