Beer and career opportunities for Randburg

KYA SAND – Brewers band together to promote their industry and responsible drinking.

Local brewers are giving back to the community through a campaign aimed at encouraging responsible drinking and fighting unemployment.

Obakeng Malope, a beer brewing student sponsored by the Beer Chick programme in the United States, has roped in nine brewers across Johannesburg to get on board.

Speaking to Randburg Sun at Optimum Craft Brewery in Kya Sand, she said responsible drinking, though being an important part of the campaign, was also a by-product of fighting unemployment.

“We have been getting a lot of unemployed people into the breweries to work and learn how to brew beer for themselves,” she said.

“So they can see it is not just about drinking beer, but there is an opportunity for a career for them in brewing, pairing and more.”

The Cicerone Certification Programme student said many South African breweries closed down during hard lockdown, and many of her friends and colleagues lost their jobs.

“One thing we are trying to promote in this campaign is that beer is not just for drinking, it offers career opportunities for thousands of people.”
