Fourways resident beats the bowls stereotype
FOURWAYS – Bowls player Shannon Davies is ready to make her mark in the Gauteng Challenge set to take place early next year.
A Fourways High School alumnus and resident is making strides on the bowls lawns.
Provincial A-side and Linden Bowls Club player, Shannon Davies (22) was named in the open women’s district team for the Gauteng Challenge taking place next year January 15 and 16.
“I always feel nervous before a game, regardless of what competition I am playing. I always just want to do my best and perform accordingly,” she said on her call-up.
With bowls being typically known as a sport for the older generation, Davies said she wants to encourage more people to take up the sport. “There are so many younger players that play and genuinely enjoy the sport. Anyone and everyone can play and I would like to encourage those who have not tried it, to please try it at least once.”
Davies got into the sport thanks to a fun day organised by her grandfather and bowls player Bob. She was approached by a coach named Darrel Johnson when she was 16 who advised her to put time and effort in order to be a great player.
Currently, in the provincial A-side, Davies is hopeful to represent South Africa in bowls. Davies said she has a number of goals she would like to achieve in the bowls sport, particularly in two competitions taking place next year February and March.
“I want to achieve winning gold in the provincial A’s competition, winning my section in the upcoming South African Junior Masters, and being selected to represent the country at some stage in my life.”
She concluded, “I always want to look back knowing that I improved and grew as a player while making them proud of how far I have come.”
