A 17-year prison sentence for carjacker.
The Brixton Regional Court found a 31-year-old man guilty of carjacking and sentenced him to 17 years imprisonment on December 6. According to Captain Xoli Mbele, the accused and his accomplice hijacked a 35-year-old male in Newlands on September 16 at 20:00.
He explained, “The victim was waiting for his friend in his silver Audi A3 when he was confronted by two suspects. One pointed a firearm at him and the accused instructed him to get out of the vehicle. They took his wallet with cash and two cell phones. They jumped into his car and the accused drove off.”
The victim and his brother chased after the accused in another car and cornered them on the corner of Market and Ackerman streets in Newlands. Mbele added, “They jumped out and the community managed to apprehend the accused. A laptop, two cellphones and a wallet with cash were recovered from him.”
Unfortunately, the accomplice with the firearm was not found and remains at large. In addition to being sentenced, the convicted accused was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
According to Mbele, the good conviction is a result of diligent work done by the investigating officer of Johannesburg Central Trio Detectives, Sergeant Billy Letsoalo. The police hope that this sentence will deter would-be offenders from committing the same crime.
