Tough 21k
GREENSIDE – Chair of Pirates Road Running Gerry Greyling said that this was the first 'live' run after two years.
Two thousand runners took to the streets for a gruelling Pirates 21k race on February 20.
Chair of Pirates Road Running Gerry Greyling said this was the first ‘live’ run after two years.
“We couldn’t have asked for better weather today,” said Greyling, after he and the team of volunteers had run on February 19 in very rainy conditions.

“It’s called Joburg’s toughest 21k for a reason. It’s a very hilly course with 450m of elevation gain.”
All runners were expected to either be fully vaccinated or be tested for Covid-19 a few days before the race.

Lebenya Nkoka won the event in a time of 01:08:31, followed closely by Jobo Khatoane in 01:08:53 and Teboho Noosi in third place in 01:09:59. All of the top three male runners ran for Mr Price.

The top female finisher was Rutendo Nyahora in 01:32:48 of Xcel Running Club, followed by Lizzy Babili of iKhayalethu Athletics Club in second in 01:33:23 and Marizaan Vermeulen of Mavericks Athletics Club in third, with a time of 01:34:25. Nkoka described the run as easy.

“This is my first race this year. I really liked the hills and feel so happy about this win. It helped me to prepare for other races,” said Nkoka.

Greyling said no records were broken this year, however, it was a successful race with much fun on the road.
