UJ crowned champions at Cliffview Primary School

This indoor league performance will motivate players for upcoming competitions.

UJ hockey teams are crowned kings and queens of the Southern Gauteng Indoor Hockey League.

March 28 was a day of celebration for the University of Johannesburg’s (UJ) senior men’s and women’s hockey teams after they emerged victorious in the 2022 edition of the tournament.

Hosted at Cliffview Primary School, the men’s side went on an unbeaten seven-game run and beat cross-town rivals Wits University 5–3 to win it all.

UJ men’s senior hockey team head coach Moabi Malebye said, “What we saw on Monday night was another team performance we can be proud of. All credit goes to the players who made this possible. They have set a standard for the rest of the men’s club. It has been fun to watch them grow over the last several weeks. Winning seven out of seven matches is something we can celebrate as an indication of progress.”

The women’s team won their same league beating the Wanderers W1 with a 2–1 in a penalty win on March 30. After an intense game, it ended in a 1–all draw but the team kept it cool and calm to win the shoot-out.

The Orange Army versed stiff competition from Wanderers A and B teams, Morningside Country Club, Wits, Beaulieu A and Southern Warriors A and B teams to be crowned champions. This was UJ’s first-ever indoor league competition that they played in and hockey club manager Anton van Rooyen is impressed with the performance of the sides. He affirmed that the experience would be really good for players’ motivation for upcoming leagues and tournaments.
