Hospital extends services

Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital in Parktown launched a dentist service partnership as part of its mixed model funding.

The Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital (NMCH) recently launched dentistry services for medical aid and self-funding patients.

The dedicated children’s hospital based in Parktown launched the services on May 5, as an expansion of the offering of its mixed model funding. CEO of the hospital Dr Nonkululeko Boikhutso said this milestone was a part of the hospital’s strategic plans to attract private revenue.

The dentistry service will be rolled out in partnership with Kids Dental Home, a mobile clinic from Pretoria founded by Dr Londiwe Sibisi-Maboye, that will be based periodically at the hospital.

According to Sibisi-Maboye, the partnership between the clinic and the hospital was inspired by shared values including a child-centric approach to healthcare. “At Kids Dental Home, we want to make children and parents feel as comfortable as possible so that they can embrace oral hygiene and related needs as part of their daily lives. NMCH aims to make children feel like they are in an environment that allows them to be children with little fear of the medical environment.”

Boikhutso said while this is a private service offering, the hospital is still focused on ensuring that public patients still find some benefit.

In April this year, Kids Dental Home performed 10 pro-bono theatre cases to commemorate World Oral Health Day for children ranging from ages three to eight.

“These are the kind of initiatives we want to bring in closer proximity to our public patients and to find ways we can also continue to fundraise, so they too, can benefit from the expansion of our services,” said Boikhutso.

Sibisi-Maboye added, “It is hard to not be inspired by Mr Nelson Mandela’s vision of this hospital which is the only dedicated facility for children in Gauteng. We want to share in this journey and extent ourselves as a private service, to also work with NMCH, to see how children who are less fortunate, can also benefit from our presence here.”
