Ongoing development benefits learners
Plans being laid to accommodate ever increasing learner numbers at Johannesburg high school.
The Northcliff Melville Times visited Roosevelt High School to see the building of nine new classrooms, and to visit the new multipurpose sporting arena that was opened recently.
The new classrooms are still needed despite eight being built last year as they try to accommodate ever-increasing primary school admissions.

“The shortage of high schools has led to existing ones needing to be flexible and make space where possible for learners,” said deputy principal Henk Ferreira. The school currently has almost 1 800 learners.
The Department of Education has provided the funding for the classrooms, but all other improvements or additions have been at the school’s expense. The beautiful bathrooms created to deal with additional ablution needs are built with the finest materials for the learners.

“When upgrades to this level were rolled out in the existing bathrooms it is with pride that we see there has been no vandalism or destruction as the learners want to protect the facilities and take pride and ownership of them.” said Ferreira.
With a 98% matric pass rate in 2021, the school has improved its status from underperforming to one of the best in the district over the last 10 years.

The recently opened sporting arena is for all indoor sports, morning assembly and other functions.
The only outstanding element is the floor which the school needs to raise funds for. It is a source of pride for the school and is one of the best facilities available at a government school in the district.
