Queen and I

Emmarentia resident shares on the memorabilia he has on Queen Elizabeth II.

Over a spot of tea with Selwyn Klass, or in his case, a very hot cup of coffee, one is likely to find themselves intrigued and fascinated by the vast knowledge he has on all things historical entertainment but most of all, all things royal.

On one fine morning, he invited the Northcliff Melville Times into his Emmarentia home where he shared on his much loved topic of the monarchies, specifically that of Queen Elizabeth II. As he sat on his sofa enjoying a slice of apple pie one could see the twinkle in his eye that this topic brought with it.

It was a fitting conversation, as over in the United Kingdom celebrations were being held in honour of Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee.

Having once personally met the Queen, this time for him is a special one that recognises her and the work she has done in the past 70 years as Head of State and Head of the Commonwealth.

Klass was buzzing with excitement as he made his way through his home, gathering all the pieces he had collected over the years, associated with the Queen.

From original coronation programmes to minted coins to letters from Buckingham Palace addressed to him, each piece had a story and each one of great sentimental value.

“I have so many royal treasures, including the official Coronation Order of Service programme and the specially minted coin on the occasion,” he said.

A self-proclaimed monarchist, Selwyn hopes the Queen would live for as long as the Queen Mother did, able to see her centenary.
