Greenside housebreaking suspect appears in court

The suspect was apprehended by a security company who handed him over to Parkview Police Station.

A 30-year-old man appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on May 26 after he was arrested for housebreaking with intent to commit an offence and malicious damage to property in Greenside on May 24.

Captain Tintswalo Sibeko of Parkview Police Station said it was alleged that the complainant was asleep, with his alarm activated and doors and windows closed. It was about 01:28 in the morning when the bell at his gate rang.

He went to check but could not see anyone. “The bell rang for the second time and there was no one, he became suspicious that it could be somebody at the gate. He pressed a panic button and the armed response from a security company arrived. They went inside to check but did not find anything,” she said.

At about 05:07 an alarm went off and he woke up to check but did not see anything outside. He then heard a noise on top of the roof and saw an unknown man standing there. The complainant pressed the panic button. “The security [officers] arrived and a man was found inside the yard.

The police were called to the scene and the man was handed over to them by the security officers.
“A preliminary investigation revealed that the storeroom door was opened and the homeowner alleged that it was closed. The suspect was arrested and charged with housebreaking with the intend to commit a crime and malicious damage to property.”
