561 new pairs of shoes for Newclare Primary School
The shoes were donated to the school through a partnership between the Dis-Chem Foundation and the Humanitarian Empowerment Fund.
A partnership between the Dis-Chem Foundation and Humanitarian Empowerment Fund (the fund) saw the donation of 561 pairs of shoes to the children of Newclare Primary School.
The youth day event was aimed at further empowering the already resilient learners, many of whom face adverse circumstances daily.

The shoes, as well as the socks they received, are said to have been made from recycled non-hazardous intravenous infusion (IV) drip bags and tubing made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), to those learners who fall under the school’s feeding scheme, where the school provides them with two hot meals a day. In addition to the donation, over 1 050 goodie bags were given away to all learners.

The school’s head of department, Helen Peterson, began proceedings on the day with a warm welcome to learners and attendees alike, while representative from the fund Clete Stevis spoke about the importance of education.
The unofficial message of the day centred around the idea that ‘nothing is impossible, no matter your current circumstances’ with Bafana legend Fabienne McCarthy and SuperSport Netball commentator Nonthle Gwavu inspiring the learners, most of whom are said to come from informal settlements, to work hard at following their dreams.

Festivities wrapped up with McCarthy and other Bafana legends running a mini-professional soccer clinic on the field with the learners, and Gwavu making arrangements to return to the community in the next few weeks to host a two-hour netball clinic with the girls.
