Creek 9 golf course to remain open to the public

The city plans to build a high-level golf academy to improve the facility beyond its current offering.

The Creek 9 golf course in Roosevelt Park is no longer managed by Randpark Golf Club as of July 1.

The facility is owned by the City of Johannesburg which has embarked on an upliftment and improvement plan which will better the existing facilities and develop a high-performance centre for the sport, according to Nthatisi Modingoane, city deputy director of media relations.

The Northcliff Melville Times visited the premises after a concerned regular raised concerns that the handover meant she would no longer be able to enjoy the space.

Modingoane said, “The centre is open and available for use by the community in the same way it has been – nothing has changed in that regard.”

Bill Swailes is now managing the course on behalf of the council which will carry out much-needed maintenance and bring resources and investments aimed at improving popular short or mashie courses. “The plans for a golf academy will only enhance the current offering and will in no way prevent the public from enjoying the sport. As you can see today, there are many people out playing in the sunshine.”

He reiterated what Modingoane had said when asked about why the handover was happening now, and what was to become of the five full-time employees, “Randpark Golf Club had a lease which ended and was not renewed. The employees were hired by, and are the responsibility of, Randpark not the city.”

On the Randpark Gold Club’s website, their notification alerting users to the change ends with, “We would like to wish the City of Johannesburg all the best in developing the game of golf further.”
