One Acts plays come to Linden
The Franklin Players Community Theatre will host a new series of one acts that are set to make you laugh and thrill you.
A one-act festival is coming to Linden and all thanks to Franklin Players Community Theatre.
Come end of July, the group will host a series of nine one-act plays that will showcase at Laerskool Louw Geldenhuys with other drama societies such as Protea Stage Productions, Parktown Girls, and Edenvale Drama Society.
The festival, which will take place on July 29 and 30 as well as August 5 and 6, consists of plays that range from light-hearted comedies to dark dramas. One of the group’s members, Soné Pieterse, said one of the external societies would also put together two musical variety show performances.
Pieterse described a one-act play as one that may consist of one or more scenes. “The play starts off with a bare stage, after which the cast have a maximum 45 minutes to set up, perform and break set back to a bare stage.”
To prepare for such a play, performers go through 12 weeks of hard work which includes two rehearsals each week per production. Should a performer find themselves in more that one show, they would have to learn their lines in their spare time.
This local theatre group has been running since 1962, so this year marks their 60th anniversary and they hope to entertain for another 60 years to come.
When asked how the arts positively impact society Pieterse said, “Theatre gives people a healthy outlet to express themselves. It gives people the opportunity to tell the stories of your life and the lives of others. It influences the way we think and feel about our own lives, forcing us to examine ourselves, our values, our behaviour.”
