Call to support the Sophiatown CPF

See if your neighbourhood is listed, and consider joining this important body to help fight crime.

Gus Malgas chairman of the Sophiatown CPF spoke to the Northcliff Melville Times about what challenges they are facing and hopes new volunteers will join them.

He said, “Covid-19 brought with it many challenges, including some resignations and members moving out of the area. But the biggest hurdle we faced was the inability for us to hold meetings and keep in touch with the public.”

A meeting was held in June to see how we can resuscitate structures that are not operational and get the body up and running again at full capacity.

“Malgas hopes] everyone who cares about the areas that they live in will come forward and work with us as we are all affected when crime hits and when communities are not united.”

He explained that private security companies have an important role but that residents should not expect them to do the work of the police. “CPFs by their very nature are a link between the public and police and should also be the vehicle that people can use to hold them accountable.

“All four sectors have their own challenges, but if we can get our sector crime forums up and running and improve our sector committees, so much could be achieved.”

If you would like to speak to Malgas about becoming a volunteer for the CPF, please call him on 072 433 6002.
