Can one incorporate taekwon-do for a holistic approach to life?

How does taekwon-do impact one's life? We found the answers at MTG Fighting Fit Central.

Many think that to train both the body and mind one would need to find a peaceful garden where they could meditate.

But, what if, instead of that garden, you found yourself in a dojang; instead of being in a state of meditation, you were doing some spinning jump kicks.

Described as being one of the most scientific Korean traditional martial arts, taekwon-do, to those who practise it, teaches more than physical fighting skills.

Found at Marks Park Sports Club is MTG Fighting Fit Central, who has been based at the club for about 12 years. The co-founder of Magua Taekwon-Do, Norman Magua (seventh dan), said they do ITF taekwon-do as their main framework, which is augmented by various self-defence and combat systems.

Magua believes there are many benefits to incorporating martial arts into one’s life, as it is a practice that can be used by everyone – from children to 70 year olds. “The fitness and flexibility aspects, as well as self-defence are advantageous for all ages.”

He has been has involved in the sport since the age of seven, and it has helped him to stay fit, while facing life’s challenges more positively and analytically. It has also made him calmer; it gives him great joy to have an activity he is passionate about.

Magua said their teachings encourage growth in a person – not only physically, but mentally too. “It also tends to balance a person out. Where one lacks confidence, it can help improve it – the same of the opposite; it helps to balance that to a healthier level of confidence,” adding that the fitness and health aspects impact one’s life positively and uplifts one’s mood.
