Northcliff Rotary hosts another successful annual speech competition

Trinity House Preparatory won the competition for second time.

The Northcliff Rotary Club together with The Kings College and Preparatory School in Bryanston hosted the finals of the Annual Speech Competition recently.

Other participating schools included Montrose Primary School, Northcliff Primary School, Franklin D Roosevelt Primary School, Roedean School, Bryanston Primary School, Trinity House Preparatory School, Constantia Primary School, Blairgowrie Primary School and Red Hill School.

“The club has been hosting this annual event for the last 42 years which has become a highlight in the primary school calendar over the years,” said club president, Rita Millan.

The schools were provided with an open theme for this year in the prepared speech category with a passing mention of the theme for this Rotary year being ‘Create Hope in the World’. The winner of the prepared speech category was Sihle Matimba of Bryanston Primary School and the runner-up was Aasiyah Moosa from Roedean School.

The winner in the impromptu speech category was Akile Buthelezi from Constantia Kloof Primary School and the runner-up was Tinashe Sika of Trinity House Preparatory School, Randpark Ridge. The overall winner of the 2023 Speech Competition was Trinity House Preparatory School, Randpark Ridge for a second year.

Chief Adjudicator, Brian Appleton from the National Eisteddfod Academy and adjudicator to this competition for the last 10 years was impressed with the standard and quality of the speeches presented by the participants. He also went on to say that many of these youngsters who excel in public speaking emerge as leaders within our communities during their adult years and these pupils must nurture this talent well into their high school and adult careers.
