Greenkeepers ditch lawnmower for bowling ball

The Madalas Association hosted the first annual Greenkeepers Tournament that had greenkeepers from across the city compete for the top prize.

A first-of-its-kind Greenkeepers Tournament took place at Linden Bowling Club.

Held over two Mondays, this tournament was organised by the Madalas Bowls Association. Matches were played in two sections of 12 and the winners of these sections went on to the playoffs that decided who the greenkeeper champion for the year was.

The association’s vice president Dave Pringle said their members came from various clubs across the province. Therefore, it was difficult to come up with something that was not club-specific until they thought of their greenkeepers, which is the one thing all clubs have in common, and so they decided to host something really special for them.

“We are trying to look after the people who give us the surface to play on. These greenkeepers make our game possible and we have to show our gratitude,” he said. Taking in the scene as the various games were being played on the first day, Pringle noted, “There are some fantastic bowlers and I wouldn’t want to play against them.”
He added the hope was to see the tournament grow and spread to many other clubs.

The association is described as one formed for men over 60 years old who just want to play a good game of bowls. It has grown to more than 200 members whose weekly monetary contributions go towards the benefit of bowls.
