UJ successfully hosts the USSA Netball Championships

This five-day much anticipated event is one of the many thrilling events netballers take part in.

Top South African university netball teams descended onto the city with the single aim of lifting the 2024 University Sport South Africa (USSA) Championship trophy. The five-day thriller unfolded at the University of Johannesburg’s (UJ) Netball Club facilities in Westdene from July 1 to 5.

The opening day was the pure display of grit these championships needed to get spectators ready for what was undeniably a grand display of the sport. Of the many matches played on the day, one that really got everyone riled up was the one between UJ’s Orange Army and University of the Free State’s (UFS) Kovsies. It was the Orange Army’s command of the court, however, that took the 49–46 win over Kovsies. Each quarter of this match was intense with UJ mostly having a four-points lead throughout.

This year marked a first for the championships as male netball teams in various categories were also included.

“We are quite excited to host the 2024 USSA Netball Championship here at UJ. Our netball teams have been on an upward trajectory over the recent years, with the ladies’ team finishing in the semi-final and the final in 2022 and 2023, respectively,” said UJ Sport senior director Nomsa Mahlangu. She added that they had invested in the infrastructure of the Westdene courts through recent refurbishments to the courts and also through the talent they had groomed to play.
