Sophiatown mourns loss of beloved constable

A tragic event unfolded at the Sophiatown Police Station as 23-year-old constable River Swartz died, prompting an outpouring of grief and raising crucial questions about mental health support for law enforcement officers.

The Sophiatown Police Station was engulfed in sorrow and disbelief following the tragic loss of 23-year-old Constable River Swartz, who reportedly died at the station on October 17.

The incident, which has left colleagues and the community in shock, reportedly involved Swartz using his service firearm to end his life. Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed that an inquest docket had been opened to investigate the circumstances surrounding the officer’s death.

“The 23-year-old police officer was rushed to the nearest medical care centre where he was certified dead on arrival,” Masondo stated.

“I cannot confirm or deny whether there was a note left by the deceased, but that will form part of the investigation.” As the investigation unfolds, the motive behind Swartz’s apparent tragic decision remains unclear, with authorities indicating that inquiries were still in their early stages.

In the wake of this heartbreaking event, the police station’s human resources management and employee health and wellness teams were providing psychosocial support to the family of the deceased officer, as well as to the colleagues affected by this devastating loss.

A memorial service was held for Swartz, attended by family and friends.
