Abbotts Northcliff High School students look to the future at the 3RC Rocking Future Roadshow
Principal Izak Stander believes the roadshow helps students identify career paths, and explains to them how to enter the path they've chosen.

Career expo company, 3RC, held yet another insightful Rocking Future Roadshow at Abbotts Northcliff High School. The day saw the school’s matric class engage with various higher learning institutions so these future leaders could better decide on their further studies.

Izak Stander, principal at the school, said this event allows for interaction, which aligns with the learners’ thinking, instead of just getting a prospectus. He considers the day to be one that creates the opportunity for learners to see the multitude of avenues they can follow when choosing their career. “Now, a learner who maybe wants to be a tattoo artist, will, from this day, know what path to follow to do so.”

This annual event has been a fixture at the school for many years, and through it, many Abbotts alum have found institutions to further their studies. Stander thinks this day is met with excitement, along with some measure of anxiety, cheekily saying the matrics are probably excited they are not sitting in maths class, but, getting more serious, explaining why some learners may also be anxious. “We also have part-time learners who are here to upgrade their marks to be able to go to tertiary education. For lots of them the anxiety is that this is their last chance, and they think they need to make it work.”

He also said, many times parents expect for their 16 to 18-year-olds to know what their career path will be. “The reality of it is that there are very few people who have gone on to work in the field they studied.” Notwithstanding all the pressures teens face already, having to have big life choices figured out, much like what they plan on studying after high school, could seem like a push for people who seldom know what they’re doing over the weekend. “I think what helps is that any set of seven subjects can help take you towards furthering your studies.”

The principal thinks it’s also important to have a conversation with learners to help guide them on their passions, because if they pursue subjects they enjoy and love, they will achieve well in them, and if that’s linked to a plan, that will take them on to furthering their studies, and winning in life.
