In the world of sports, few journeys are as inspiring as that of Ben Storm of Hoërskool Linden who has turned his passion into a powerful tool for personal growth and resilience.
His initial decision to choose swimming over cross country in primary school, influenced by his mother’s advice to stay fit for other sports, has transformed his life through the water.

Swimming has become more than just a sport for him; it serves as a sanctuary during challenging times. He describes it as his escape, helping him relieve stress and find happiness.
Through the rigorous training and discipline that swimming demands, Ben has learned invaluable lessons about resilience, determination, and discipline – qualities that extend beyond the pool and into every aspect of his life.
Among the many competitions he has participated in, the 2023 South African National Junior Age Group Champs stands out as a pivotal moment in his swimming career.
Competing in his first national championship, he made it to the finals in the 50m breaststroke, an experience that remains etched in his memory.

Throughout his swimming journey, Ben has competed in numerous prestigious events, including the SA Regional Champs, SA National Junior Champs, CGA Champs, KZN Champs, and NTS Champs, to name a few. Each competition has contributed to his growth, but the journey has not been without challenges.
The road to success is often fraught with obstacles. Ben recalls pushing through intense training sessions and competing despite injuries and illnesses. Yet, in moments of disappointment, he found strength in two powerful quotes: ‘Keep pushing, it’ll be worth it’ and ‘It can only get better from here.’
These mantras fuelled his determination and resilience, preventing defeat from becoming a reason to quit.
While he once dreamed of competing at a World Aquatics Championship, his goals have evolved and he is focusing on his current journey.
As Ben wraps up the school swimming season and prepares for his matric year, he remains dedicated to training and personal development.
His story is not just about personal achievements but about inspiring others. “I hope to encourage fellow athletes to step out of their comfort zones, believing that growth and improvement come from embracing challenges,” he said.
His message to younger sportsmen and women is simple yet profound: “You get what you work for, not what you wish for.”
