Experience the magic of storytelling at the Melville Koppies

Dive into the world of stories at Melville Koppies, with storyteller Merle Grace, every second Sunday, for captivating tales that link our past to the present.

Melville Koppies has launched a brand new storytelling initiative, taking place every second Sunday of the month, with its first readings on March 9. Their storyteller, Merle Grace, said that she could almost imagine a fire in the middle of the hut, with young and old listeners gathering to hear stories from our collective past.

“Melville Koppies is exceptionally rich historically, and includes stone age camps and a Setswana furnace. San tools were also found on the site.”

Grace highlighted that she would like to link her stories to these histories, so, her very first story of the year was the ancient myth of the San, explaining where fire comes from.

Adults and children were both entranced as Grace told the tale. The children then re-enacted some parts of the story in a quick game of Simon Says, before Grace launched into a second story, called: Myriam Meerkat (A Nal’ibali Story), which takes place in the Kalahari.

After story-time, parents and children took off to explore the lushness of the Koppies.

Grace added that everyone is welcome at the next event, which will be at Marks Parks Sports Club on Judith Road between 08:30 and 08:50. She advised to wear takkies, as it is a ten minute hike to the lecture hut.

On the next storytelling Sunday, she will tell the story of Koketso’s party shoes (a Nal’ibali tale) and Baby in a tree (A SeSotho adoption story).
