Reviving the Brixton community through sports
The Brixton Multipurpose Centre saw sports come alive at the Pule Maraisane Tournament, getting youth active as a means of bringing them together and off the streets.

Excitement filled the Brixton Multipurpose Centre as it hosted the Pule Maraisane Tournament, a two-day sports event on May 10 and 11, featuring soccer and netball matches, aimed to revive sports in the area.

The soccer tournament, organised by Pule Maraisne, saw the top eight soccer teams battle it out for the grand prize.
Organiser Christopher Mpofana emphasised the importance of the soccer tournament, stating that they have not been playing football in a while, however, thanks to former South African youth international midfielder Pule Maraisne, who funded the tournament as means of giving back to the community, football is making a comeback.
He noted that he feels the absence of a soccer team has contributed to rising crime rates in the area, and that forming a team was a step towards engaging the youth, and keeping them off the streets.

The tournament featured several matches. On Saturday, Brixton Young Stars faced off against Gunners FC, with Gunners emerging victorious with a score of 3–0. Following that match, Antea Football Club drew 2–2 with MMS Soccer Club, but triumphed in a tense penalty shootout.
Sunday’s matches continued the competitive spirit. All Stars played to a 2–2 draw against Gunners FC, with All Stars emerging victorious on penalties. Awusake faced Antea, with Antea securing a 4–0 victory to advance to the final.
The championship match saw All Stars take on Antea FC. All Stars dominated, winning decisively with a score of 4–0, thus claiming the title of champions of the Pule Maraisane Tournament.
As winners, All Stars walked away with R10 000, a trophy, and medals, celebrating their hard-fought victory.
The tournament gave local talent the opportunity to stretch their legs and put on a show for the spectators; it also highlighting the importance of sports bringing people together, to create a positive outlet for the youth of Brixton.
