The contractor was rushed to Milpark Hospital for immediate medical treatment, having reportedly sustained severe burns to his chest and arms. What, exactly, transpired is still under investigation.

Fairland Community Policing Forum (CPF) member for the Victim Support Unit Bhaai Cassim, who was called to the scene by a resident, stated that there were two members on scene, neither of whom could produce any proper documentation. “We initially though they were cable thieves. When City Power officials arrived, we were told they were subcontractors.”

Cassim added that, due to the seriousness of the incident, the substation was cordoned off by danger tape and access was restricted.

Ward 88 councillor Nicolene Jonker stated that she has spoken to the depot manager from City Power Hursthill, confirming that all incident reports have been completed and submitted. “A meeting will soon be held to decide on the way forward, and how repairs will be handled. I’ll share any confirmed updates or timelines with you as soon as I get them.”

She highlighted that, because a subcontractor got injured, the matter has to be handled according to strict safety and investigation procedures before anyone is allowed back on site.

Jonker wrote to City Power asking for a formal written statement clarifying the following:
• The details and cause of the incident,
• The identity and role of the subcontractor involved,
• The safety protocols in place at the time,
• Estimated timelines for the investigation, and
• Interim measures to restore service to affected areas.
