A journey to inspire and empower children

With a focus on accountability and parental support, Wandile Bathe's books aim to empower children in under-resourced communities to dream big and that their aspirations are valid.

Balancing his studies for social work at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), Wandile Bathe has added his newfound passion: Storytelling to empower children in under-resourced communities.

His journey began with a love for storytelling, inspired by his grandmother’s folklores and his own life experiences. Bathe’s passion for writing for children was solidified when he read Diary of a Wimpy Kid, which motivated him to create stories that inspire courage and imagination. “My stories reflect my life experiences, and the support I’ve received from my family. I want to share that with young children, encouraging them to dream big.”

His books, such as Mandla’s Mark and Other Stories and Why the Owl Never Sleeps, are designed to impart valuable life lessons. “I want children to understand the importance of accountability and the power of parental support. Through whimsical characters, I aim to communicate these messages effectively.”

In his social work practice, he utilises storytelling as a tool to connect with diverse groups. “Storytelling allows me to interact with people and understand their experiences. It fosters empathy and creates a safe space for individuals to share their stories.”

He acknowledges the challenges faced in under-resourced communities, particularly the lack of resources for children’s education and development. “Many community art centres are underfunded and understaffed. It is disheartening to see children eager to read, but unable to access books.”

Despite these challenges, he remains optimistic about the power of stories. Children in these communities have taught him that imagination knows no bounds. “Stories provide comfort and hope, allowing them to escape harsh realities.”

Through his commitment to storytelling and social work he wants to reignite children’s dreams and show them that their aspirations in life are valid.
