Safety concerns over Fairland pedestrian bridge
Ward 89 councillor raises concerns about the potential hazards as children use the bridge to cross the highway.
The Fairland pedestrian bridge, which connects Fairland to Weltevreden Park over the N1 highway, has become a point of concern due to safety issues.
This comes after parts of the bridge’s balustrades were stolen or broken.

Ward 89 councillor Zander Shawe raised concerns about the maintenance of the bridge, saying that if the issues are not addressed, it will keep happening. “If that happens, they will have to replace the whole thing, which might be more costly in the long run,” he explained.

He added that many children from Laerskool Fairlands use it to cross the highway on their way to school. “The risk is that children can fall through the balustrades of the bridge and hurt themselves.”
Shawe reiterated that the primary goal is to keep the community safe. He called for action from the South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) to ensure the bridge remains a safe passage for all users.
A contractor who is contracted under Sanral said that they are aware of the issues with the bridge and assured that they will do their best to fix the bridge.
