Q&A with the outgoing president of Rotary Club of Northcliff, Ragu Govender

As his term as president comes to an end, Govender shares how his involvement with the club has impacted his life.

Why did you join Rotary?
My wife and I have always been drawn to community service. For many years, our involvement was informal and personal. When we were introduced to Rotary, we found a structured platform that aligned perfectly with our values. The governance, accountability, and global reach of Rotary provided a framework within which we could contribute more effectively. Joining Rotary has also broadened our social network in meaningful ways, connecting us with like-minded individuals locally and globally who are passionate about creating positive change. It’s a space where friendships are formed through service, and where diverse perspectives enrich both personal growth and collective impact.

What does being part of Rotary enable you to do?
Being a Rotarian enables me to live the values of ‘Service Above Self’ every day. It offers a space to serve with purpose, surrounded by individuals who are equally committed to uplifting others. Rotary allows us to be the voice for the voiceless – to shine a light where there is darkness, to bring hope where there is despair.
It also reminds me that service is not just about what we give, but also about who we become in the process – more compassionate, more aware, and more connected to the communities we serve.

What did your role as president teach/show you about yourself?
It has been a truly humbling experience to be entrusted with the role of president of the Rotary Club of Northcliff. While I accepted the position with a deep sense of duty, I soon realised that leadership in a service organisation is not about personal achievement, but about enabling others to thrive in their service. The role challenged my strategic thinking and tested my change management abilities, especially as we worked to position the club for a sustainable future.
One of the most profound lessons I’ve learned is the importance of listening, really listening, to diverse voices within the club. As we inducted new members, our club dynamics evolved. It became clear that fostering an inclusive environment where each person felt valued and heard was as important as the projects themselves. I learned that effective leadership often means stepping back, creating space for others to shine, and recognising that our collective strength lies in our shared passion for service.

What are some of the initiatives you are proud to have achieved/maintained in the club?
It has been a privilege to help preserve and grow the legacy of our club. I’m particularly proud that we continued our longstanding signature projects – the Wheelchair Initiative and the Speech Contest, both of which have been pillars of our service for over 40 years. These projects reflect the deep roots of Rotary’s commitment to dignity, mobility, and youth empowerment. In addition, this year we were able to introduce new initiatives that reflect the changing needs of our community. Supporting Thandanani House, a residential facility for individuals with psychiatric disorders, allowed us to bring attention to mental health, a subject often overlooked. Hosting our very first Classic Car Show was another milestone that not only brought the community together but also raised valuable funds for our causes. We also continued with smaller but equally meaningful projects — distributing school stationery, planting trees, and bringing joy to children through Christmas and Easter egg surprises. These moments of giving, while seemingly simple, have a lasting impact and remind us that even small acts of kindness can ripple far.

What is your message to the incoming president?
To the incoming president, my message is simple: Lead with humility and grace. You have already walked alongside me in this journey, and you’ve seen firsthand both the challenges and the triumphs. Continue to build on what we’ve started – not just the projects, but the spirit of unity and purpose within the club.
Remember, Rotary is not about one person’s vision, but about empowering the collective to achieve shared goals. Trust your team, listen deeply, and never lose sight of the immense privilege it is to serve.
